Week 1: A Review

If you remember my post awhile back about Preschool/Homeschool then you remember I started THIS week!

On Monday, we officially started the "school year". I have found that some people start their school years at the beginning in January but we're following with the other crowd that starts each new year in September/August!

Gator was thrilled to start our school at home project. She's been watching the books trickle in over the past couple weeks and had the itch to use them! Well, her itch was scratched!

First, everyone has to find their place that works for them. So far...we're using the kitchen. We store all of our books and most of our homeschool supplies in our giganto pantry. We decorated the walls with the calendar, map, etc. It feels like a great environment to learn!

Each day, we do the required readings...sometimes we do more, sometimes we don't have to do as much because we did them the day before. We also have done some fun activities each day this week (more about that in a few).

Gator was kind of skeptical about some of the books. One of the books we started with this week was the Children's Everyday Bible. Well, one day we were reading it and I said, "It says God made living animals that fly in the sky..." so I looked at her and said, "Gator what did God make that flies in the sky" (in the book their is a picture with trees and birds). She sat for a moment, thought for a second and said, "God made airplanes painted like dogs and helicopters that talk..." I smiled and thought to myself, we have a lot to teach you!

She really is enjoying the Bible stories and is very curious about Adam, Eve and the snake. In fact after that story Gator chased Peanut around saying "beware of the snake".

We love all the books though. Ok, some more then others! One of our other favorites is The Lion Storyteller Bedtime Book. It has a few really cute stories. Gator loves the Tiger & Mouse story at the beginning but also likes the Contented Priest (weird name for a story but great story even for the non-religious!). We have read the Poky Puppy Story from A Family Treasury of Little Golden Books: 46 Best-Loved Stories everyday this week!

She has been working hard on learning the seasons and months of the year. This wasn't even something I had thought about attempting to teach her YET except that it was part of the The Berenstain Bears' Big Book of Science and Nature (which if you are interested in you should check out Sonlight's website to get it cheaper from them!!). It has a cute little poem at the beginning of the book...it reads something along the lines of: Four Seasons - Four is All - Winter Spring Summer Fall. Twelve Months, that's a lot to say. January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December. She has it pretty much memorized up until she gets to May then she needs prompting with the summer months until September and she can finish. Not bad for the FIRST week!

I'm babbling now...really I am. But I cannot begin to tell you how fabulous this has been for ALL of us.

We also did field trips each day this week!!! On Monday, we met up at the park and attended a sing-a-long. The girls had fun but it was sooooo hot. Then, Tuesday we went with our Homeschool Preschool group to the Gardens to visit the houses. Oh, they had such fun!!

We brought a picnic lunch that day and boy did the girls eat!!!! They were starving from all the fun they had at the eight enchanted houses!

Wednesday was a day that I had planned to rest...but, Earl had other plans for us! We then decided to talk about BIG storms and made our hurricane survival list! We had to go to Target and get batteries, food, water, etc. Gator really enjoyed helping with the survival box. She made sure that we had plenty of yummy snacks in case the power went out and a box of o's (cheerios) because Daddy cannot live without those.

Thursday we made another quick trip to Target because Gator was getting rewarded with a new tag reader book - LeapFrog® Tag Activity Storybook Toy Story 3: Together Again and LeapFrog Tag Activity Storybook - Fancy Nancy 2. They were both on sale for $9.99 and we had two $3.00 off coupons AND she had a Target giftcard (thanks Katie!!). After our trip to Target we met friends at the local CFA for lunch, play and of course...icecream!

This has been a fun-filled week. Everyone has been great. Achoo has been phenomenal!

He's such a good baby. He is either wide awake and wanting to learn right along with his sisters, chilling in the sling OR snoozin' in his seat while they run around and play!

Today, we finished our school week and had the trip to the doctors office for both Achoo and Gator. It's been a great first week and everyone is happy!

Hope I didn't bore you with all that babble!!
